About Christian Counseling
Professional Care for your Body, Mind and Soul
Is faith a foundational part of your life?
Are you looking for a counselor who will encourage you to grow spiritually as you address concerns and struggles in your life?
Do you need a fellow believer to talk to about questions, doubts or fears related to a current crisis in your life?
Do you value the freedom to talk about matters of spirituality in a confidential and accepting environment?
Making the decision to seek professional counseling is not an easy one. It requires a commitment of your valuable resources: time, money, mental energy and a willingness to grow. Knowing that your therapist understands and respects your core beliefs is very important for many Christ followers. As believers, we embrace certain values, beliefs and practices that are central to our lives. Working with a therapist who understands the culture and experience of the Christian faith will help you address the issues that bring you into counseling in a way that is congruent with your beliefs.
At Hope for the Journey, we believe that every individual is guided by their spirituality (beliefs, morals, faith and value system). It is not our purpose to impose our personal faith or beliefs on anyone nor reduce struggles and concerns to “spiritual issues”. Rather, in collaboration with you and the Spirit of God, we offer to help integrate spirituality and faith into your journey of healing and growth. Our counselors will help you explore and understand the challenges you face from a spiritual, emotional, intellectual and relational perspective.
Do I really need Counseling?
The problem with trying to handle things on your own is that you can only do what you have always done. In moments of crisis our deepest habits win out, even if they were not very effective in the first place. We need counsel when we have come to the end of our own wisdom and understanding.
Can't I just talk to my friend or ministry leader?
Talking with trusted people and receiving their support and guidance is often very helpful. God calls us to bear each others' burdens and to live in community. However, there are times when our problems are too complex and require more time and skill than a friend or family member can provide. The people closest to us usually have excellent intentions and don't like seeing us struggling or in pain. Often their attempts to "fix us" or "fix the problem" leave us feeling invalidated, foolish or even believing we are unfaithful in our walk with God.
We go to experts for help for many areas, including financial, technical, medical and legal issues. In the same way, our counselors have education and expertise in the area of human behavior, emotions, and relationships, which are guided by Biblical truth and principles.
We have specialized training to:
Listen carefully to understand your core challenge or struggle
Provide valuable feedback and offer new perspective
Uncover the root of unwanted emotional reactions
Identify thought or behavior patterns that are ineffective or harmful
Construct practical strategies to overcome obstacles
Understand your unique experience and help you make sense of your story
Teach healthy relationship principles to love and respect yourself, others and God
Discover strengths and empower lasting change
What is Christian Counseling?
At Hope for the Journey, we define Christian Counseling as: therapy services provided by a professional counselor who is a Christ follower and who integrates the power and work of Jesus Christ with their clinical education and training. We will help you express and clarify the issues you bring to counseling and offer Biblical principles and clinical tools to address those issues. Often people are afraid to express thoughts or feelings that could be judged by others. We will invite you to talk openly and courageously about the thoughts, perspectives and feelings you have regarding your challenging situation. Our counselors will take your lead regarding the incorporation of prayer and references to the Bible in counseling sessions.
We understand that an individual’s relationship with God is unique and personal. Sometimes, when clients come to see us, they are quite disgruntled or feel betrayed by God. Others are struggling to reconcile their beliefs about God with how they feel about themselves or the hardships of life. Wherever you find yourself on your spiritual journey, we will meet you where you are with grace and truth.
What Christian Counseling is not
At Hope for the Journey, we do not believe that it is helpful or healing to suggest that our clients have more faith, read the Bible and pray more, or work harder to live in obedience to God's will. We do believe that the practices of Bible reading and prayer nurture our relationship with God and are gifts to our soul. Obedience and surrender to God are a path to peace, freedom and abundant life.
In addition, Christian counseling does not involve an expectation that the counselor or client give the "correct" Sunday School answer. Instead we value turning our attention to the presence of God’s love, truth, grace and mercy, while inviting honesty about the messiness of our own souls and lives.
We also understand that as Christ followers, we will continue to struggle with temptation and sin, facing the dilemma Paul talks about in Romans 7, “I don't really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate…So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.” As Christian counselors, we do not stand in judgment, but rather we help our clients step onto the path of repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation with God, others and themselves.
A Client's Perspective
Before attending counseling I had many beliefs about myself and God that just weren’t true. I remember thinking, ‘I am reading my Bible and asking for God’s help, but I am really suffering.’ After losing my sister, I felt very distant from God. The Bible says that God is close to the broken hearted, but I felt so alone. During counseling I was able to explore my grief and how I wasn’t just dealing with the death of my sister, but many other situations that I hadn’t really grieved from my past. I had buried many memories and emotions, trying to be strong. My counselor helped me work through my feelings and understand how my past influences the decisions I make, even today. I discovered in the Bible that even God’s chosen people felt far from Him when they were overwhelmed. The best part of counseling was discovering that God's grace had always been available to me, but my tendency toward guilt and shame kept it hidden.
