Faith in Counseling
Not everyone’s spiritual life will come up in counseling. But for people who have an active spiritual life, it is important that you have a counselor that can address spiritual needs and the strengths that it can bring to the counseling process.
I am a Christian, but not the kind that gives simple answers to complex questions. Too often we hear just pray about it or it must be God’s will from well-meaning family or friends. While that may be part of the answer, it usually doesn’t do justice to the issues with which we are struggling.
Life is complicated, the Christian life is complicated, and sometimes understanding God is complicated. I love helping people unravel difficult situations to see how those can help us to learn more about ourselves, the people we care about, and ultimately grow our relationship with God. In Proverbs God promises that “If you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2: 3-5) Thank goodness there is insight and understanding available to those that ask, but it is not always easy to find!
You might be asking, why might I need to see a counselor if I already have God? Counselors have specific education aimed at helping people to identify and talk about problems while heading toward solutions. Counselors also can teach skills on things like: tolerating distress, understand our emotions and being relationally effective. These are all things that we can learn, but we need to learn the information before we can be really good at it.
The best things about having a Christian counselor is that being able to draw on the Bible and God for help. Paul describes this in 2 Corinthian 1:4, when he says “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God”. It is a unique privilege to be able to be an ambassador of Christ.
